Proud of GAB Posted Recall Signature Petitions
At first I was disgusted that Republicans so distrusted the recall process that they required all recall petitions to be posted online. We had signed the petitions, expecting a certain amount of respect and privacy. It seemed like voting, and it seemed abusive to expose the private information of those who signed. And there exists a very real opportunity for abuse against those who signed. Future petition signers may think twice before making their signatures so public.
Curiosity took me to the GAB website to view the millions of petition signatures posted there. I now have a different viewpoint. It is entirely clear that these are authentic signatures by Wisconsin citizens seeking better government. Individually signed, one by one, many hundreds of thousands of signatures were collected, from real people who had dared to hope that government could be better than it is now.
Browsing through thousands of signatures, names, and addresses it occurred to me that these signatures are not much different than those on the bottom of our Declaration of Independence. The courage and determination of each recall signer is not much different than that demonstrated by John Hancock, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and the other brave Declaration signers.
These recall petitions are history. What a beautiful memorial. I am so proud to be part of this.
